True Love

is just a shelter away

Defenders of Animals at Risk Foundation is a 100% volunteer operated non-profit organization, so you know that your donation will go directly to our mission of helping vulnerable animals find a loving home. Our shelter (the shelter we support) is located in the heart of Mexico, which has the largest number of street dogs in Latin America. About 70 percent of the 18 million dogs in Mexico live on the street, according to the Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

Who Are We?

About DAR Foundation

The DAR Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of abused, abandoned, mistreated, and neglected homeless animals.

As the U.S.-based sister organization of the shelter Fundación DAR in Tequisquiapan, Mexico, our role is to raise awareness about the plight of neglected animals in Mexico and to connect rescued dogs with loving, permanent homes in the United States.

How can you help us?

Donate

Your donation saves lives. Approximately 70% of the dogs in Mexico live on the street. They have all been abandoned, and many have been abused and mistreated. Your donation goes directly to Fundación DAR, where the funds are used to purchase supplies and medical care, as well as to pay for the transportation of each animal to a loving home in the U.S. or Canada.

Adopt or foster

Every dog that we place in a permanent home opens up the space in our facility for us to rescue another animal. All dogs that are available for adoption are given a clean bill of health and are fully vaccinated and sterilized. If you cannot adopt, please consider fostering.

Be a Flight Angel

Returning home from Mexico? Be a Flight Angel and help our dogs get to their new homes. It’s a great way to see the positive results of our hard work! Our team in Mexico handles all the details and paperwork, so it's easy to do and costs you nothing. A team volunteer will meet you at the Mexico City airport with the dog; our rescue partner meets you at your destination. It’s that easy.

Volunteer

We are always in need of volunteers. There are many ways to help our mission. You can support the U.S.-based foundation by joining our team, or by working on social media, fundraising, and education.
At our shelter in Mexico, there are many ways to be of help and volunteers are always needed.

More Than Just a Shelter

Since 2019 the shelter in Tequisquiapan, Mexico has offered homeless animals a second chance through dedicated care, medical treatment, training, and rehabilitation, followed by placement in loving, permanent homes.

We also work to decrease the growing number of strays through education, spaying/neutering programs, and outreach.

Improving the Lives of Animals

Through hands-on rescue, love and attention, training, and rehabilitative medical care, we are able to place hundreds of dogs in new homes each year.

Advocacy & Education

The situation of abandoned animals in Mexico is among the worst in the Americas. Education and awareness are important goals. We also fight to implement legislation to protect animal rights
